The little scenario above underscores how pre-selecting the damage type die can have dire consequences for your PC. There is nothing saying WHEN you have to declare what dice your going to use though. If you read the spell carefully, you have to choose a die for the damage energy type. It’s the perfect spell for a Wild Magic sorcerer like Aeolyn. The drawback of Chaos Bolt is giving up control on selecting the damage energy. It’s slightly less powerful than Chromatic Orb (Player’s Handbook p221) but has the potential (12.5% chance) to harm more than one creature. The spell can be found on page 156 of Xanathar’s Guide to Everything (XGtE). Chaos Bolt: You’re Playing It Wrong!Ĭhaos Bolt is a pretty powerful 1st level sorcerer spell. ![]() This triefling sorceress is hoping to have the arcane Chaos Bolt spell leap to a second creature. That is (looking up spell) cold damage… Dang…ĭM: Crystalydia smirks, “Little sorcerer, did they teach you nothing at magic school! Aw, but your didn’t go to magic school did you? Here’s your lesson. Player: Yes! A great roll! Crystalydia is as good as dead! I’ll choose the red d8 as the damage type and the blue d8 and d6 as addition damage. She’ll shouts “Chao fulmen iniectum”, and uses her Action to cast Chaos Bolt! Player: Ok, Aeolyn is totally out of spell slots! She’ll convert two Sorcery Points, as a bonus action, and create a 1st level spell slot. Aeolyn is sure she’ll deal the final blow. Let’s look at a snippet of game play involving Dungeons and Dragon’s (D&D) Chaos Bolt spell and why you’re playing it wrong:ĭungeon Master (DM): The rest of your adventuring party has dealt massive damage to the evil white dragon Cystalydia. The white dragon Crystalydia takes on Aeolyn and the Heroes of Neverwinter on the peaks of the Ice Spires. ![]()
